Crane Access Mats & Heavy Duty Working Platforms
Build stable crane access routes and work areas on soft or uneven ground with mats supplied worldwide in pallet and container loads from European ports.
Why Ground Protection For Crane Access Matters
Most crane work does not happen on perfect hardstanding. Lifts often take place on verges, yards, compounds and reinstatement sensitive ground, sometimes a long way from permanent roads. Without a stable running surface and working area, cranes can bog in, tilt or disturb the ground around buried services. Access may be restricted, set up takes longer and lifts are delayed.
Composite crane access mats create reliable haul routes and large working platforms so cranes can be set up in the safest available position. They work as part of your overall lift plan, providing a stable base layer beneath certified outrigger pads or steel stools. GroundGuards Global supports civil contractors, steel erectors, energy and utility projects, ports and terminals, rail and metro work, military teams, rental fleets and distributors who need repeatable crane access solutions on many sites.

What You Gain From Composite Crane Access & Platforms
Using composite mats for crane access gives bulk buyers, rental fleets and distributors a flexible system that can be redeployed wherever heavy lifts are required. Our systems are independently tested and proven in demanding hire fleets, so you can standardise on a single platform solution across your crane operations.
- Build access roads that keep cranes moving over soft, rutted or uneven ground
- Create large working platforms for assembly, rigging and lifting areas
- Spread load beneath certified outrigger pads to help reduce subgrade pressure
- Protect asphalt, concrete and paved surfaces around lift locations
- Reuse the same mats across multiple projects, sectors and countries

How Our Composite Crane Access Systems Work
Crane access layouts usually combine three elements: an approach route, a working platform and engineered outrigger pads. GroundGuards mats provide the first two. Interlocking panels form continuous haul roads and large working areas, spreading load over a wider footprint than bare ground alone. Surface textures provide traction for crane tyres and tracks in wet conditions.
Certified outrigger pads, steel stools or timber mats are then placed on top of the platform in positions defined by the lift plan. This keeps outrigger bearing pressures within the ground’s allowable capacity while the mats protect underlying soils, surfacing and buried services.
Our team can help you choose suitable mat types for the crane class, ground conditions and access distance involved. When lifts are complete, mats are lifted, inspected and reused on the next project, giving a long life asset instead of one use stone or sacrificial timber.
Weight loading is not always straightforward, so read our weight loading guide before you choose.
Crane Mats Are Not Outrigger Pads
GroundGuards crane access mats are designed to create access roads and working platforms. They do not replace certified outrigger pads, stools or engineered bearing systems. Always follow the crane manufacturer’s instructions, applicable standards and your appointed person’s lift plan when selecting outrigger pads and verifying ground bearing capacity. Our mats should be treated as part of the overall ground bearing solution, not as a standalone outrigger pad.
